Dry Sift: dry sieving
Principle
Dry material is worked over sieves to detach and collect a trichome-rich fraction. Depending on the final product, it may remain powdery, be pressed or be processed further.
Why two Dry Sift products can differ greatly
The number of passes, temperature, mesh size, pressure and cleanliness of the material affect the result. “Dry Sift” alone therefore does not indicate a purity level.
Ice-O-Lator: ice-water separation
Principle
Cold makes resinous structures easier to separate. The material is agitated in cold water, then filtered through several bags or sieves. Fractions may be classified by mesh size in microns.
After filtration
The collected material must be dried properly. This stage matters: fine filtration cannot compensate for poorly controlled drying.
Rosin: heat and pressure
Principle
Rosin is obtained by compressing starting material between heated surfaces to release a resinous fraction. The process adds no extraction solvent such as butane or ethanol.
The starting material makes all the difference
Flowers, hash and other starting materials do not give the same yield or texture. Temperature, pressure and duration must be adapted; “solventless” does not mean all rosins are equal.
Comparing the three methods
Texture
Dry Sift can be sandy or pressed; Ice-O-Lator varies with the fraction and pressing; Rosin is usually oilier or stickier. These are tendencies, not absolute rules.
Filtration and microns
