Micron values describe filter mesh size, not a universal quality score. Here is how to interpret them carefully.

The numbers 45u, 73u, 90u or 120u often appear on filtered hash. The “u” refers to the micrometre (µm) and describes the size of a sieve’s openings. This technical information is often wrongly turned into a simple ranking such as “smaller = better”.
An appealing fraction actually depends on genetics, trichome head size, filtration method and the producer’s aim. Micron ratings explain particle-size selection; they replace neither analysis nor assessment of the final product.
A 73 µm sieve has openings of about 73 micrometres. During filtration, smaller particles may pass through while larger ones are retained, depending on shape, moisture and processing.
The sieve does not directly separate CBD from THC or terpenes by molecular size. It sorts physical structures such as trichomes and plant particles. Chemical composition must be measured in a laboratory.
Filter bags are stacked with several mesh sizes. Each level can collect a distinct fraction. Some producers keep them separate; others blend several fractions after inspection.
Trichomes are not identical on every plant. A prized fraction from one strain is not necessarily the most appealing from another. An isolated value should therefore not become an absolute ranking.
This claim is too simplistic. A 73u fraction may be very clean or contain more unwanted material, depending on the starting material and technique. Cleanliness must be observed, not assumed.
The number of filtrations does not translate into a purity multiplier. Three stages may progressively remove different sizes, but the result depends on the method and sorting between fractions.
A micron rating does not give CBD content. It describes physical filtration. The batch COA remains necessary for composition.
Check the process, stated fractions, starting material, texture, date or batch and analysis. A micron number without further explanation leaves the information incomplete.

Trichome heads do not all have the same diameter. Different bag or sieve sizes separate fractions. Some intermediate meshes are sought after because they can concentrate a high proportion of gland heads while limiting some plant debris.
A 73u fraction from average material may be less appealing than another micron fraction from excellent raw material. Variety, maturity, temperature, handling and drying remain decisive. Microns describe filtration, not a final score.
