CBD hash, resins & pollen: a complete guide

CBD hash and CBD resins generally refer to products made by separating or concentrating a resinous hemp fraction, sometimes then compacting or pressing it. Kief usually means powdery material rich in separated trichomes.

In the CBD trade, “pollen” often means sifted or pressed material; it should not automatically be confused with the plant's reproductive botanical pollen.

Glandular trichomes, found particularly on flowers, produce many metabolites, including cannabinoids and aromatic compounds. Hash processes often aim to separate some of these structures from plant material.

Starting material remains decisive: genetics, cultivation, maturity, harvesting, drying and storage affect what can subsequently be separated or concentrated.

Dry Sift relies on mechanical dry sifting. Water-and-ice methods use cold and filtration to separate resinous particles. Other processes may use additional sorting, followed by pressing to bind the material.

Trichome separation must be distinguished from shaping the final product. The term on a product page must match the actual process used.

Texture depends on material, plant-particle proportion, pressing, moisture, temperature and storage. Hash can be dry and crumbly, soft, creamy, sticky or compact.

None of these textures alone reveals purity, CBD percentage or the exact method.

The CBD percentage and CBD content describe cannabidiol presence according to the unit used. The THC percentage and THC content must be read separately.

In Switzerland, hemp containing less than 1% THC is outside narcotics legislation; other requirements may nevertheless depend on product category and intended use.
